In 79 CE, Mount Vesuvius erupted and destroyed the nearby Roman city of Pompeii. Before the eruption, Pompeii was a thriving city filled with homes, markets, bathhouses, and temples. When Vesuvius exploded, it sent ash, gas, and volcanic rock high into the sky. The city was buried for nearly 1,700 years before being rediscovered in the 1700s.
